Whats It Called When You Cant Sleep
Hey there my fellow insomniacs! We all know the pain of staring at the ceiling, counting imaginary sheep, and wondering when our brains will finally let us catch some zzz's. So, what's it called when you can't sleep? It's called torture, pure and simple. But fear not, my sleep-deprived compadres, for I have scoured the interwebs to bring you the best solutions to your nighttime woes. And, because I like to keep things interesting, I've paired each solution with an appropriate GIF. You're welcome.
When you can't sleep because your brain won't shut up
Tip: Write it down
Do you ever feel like your brain is just on overdrive? Like there's a never-ending stream of thoughts, worries, and to-do lists bouncing around in there? Trust me, I feel you. That's why my first tip is to grab a pen and paper (or your phone, if you're fancy like that) and jot down everything that's on your mind. Getting it out of your head and onto paper can help you feel a sense of relief and control. Plus, you won't have to worry about forgetting that brilliant idea for a unicorn-themed coffee shop in the morning.
When you can't sleep because you're too hot or cold
Tip: Adjust your sleeping environment
Are you tossing and turning because you're either sweating or shivering? It's time to make some tweaks to your sleeping environment. If you're too hot, turn down the thermostat or invest in some breathable, moisture-wicking sheets. If you're too cold, add an extra blanket or two, or invest in a space heater (just make sure you practice safe heating habits!).
When you can't sleep because you're too wired
Tip: Create a bedtime routine
Do you spend the hours before bed checking emails, scrolling through Instagram, and generally being a busy bee? It's time to wind down, my friend. Creating a bedtime routine can help signal to your brain that it's time to get sleepy. Try some soothing yoga, a warm bath, or reading a book. And, for the love of all things holy, put down the caffeine and alcohol a few hours before bed.
When you can't sleep because you're worried about not sleeping
Tip: Let go of the pressure
This one's a doozy, because it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. You can't sleep because you're worried about not sleeping, which makes it even harder to sleep, and on and on it goes. So, my advice? Let go of the pressure. Instead of fixating on how much sleep you're getting (or not getting), focus on creating a relaxing bedtime routine and creating a sleep-conducive environment (see above). And, if all else fails, embrace the fact that you're up late and do something productive or fun, like learning a new language or binge-watching Gilmore Girls.
So there you have it, folks. A few silly but hopefully helpful ideas for when you find yourself staring at the ceiling at 3am. Sleep tight (eventually)!
